How to Receive Zaps on Nostr

Step one: Download Wallet of Satoshi

***Note: This is a CUSTODIAL lightning wallet. Not your keys, not your cheese. For the purpose of this guide we only recommend using this wallet for ease of use and speed. If you need to secure a large stack--look into a hardware wallet.  ***

Lightning payments are meant to be “hot”. Think of it like a checking account vs savings account. Don’t use this as your main wallet. Okay now that we’ve got that out of the way--you now have a wallet to receive Zaps using something called LNURL. 

What is LNURL? 

It’s almost like email for lightning payments. Instead of sending your really long hash as an invoice you can send someone an email-like string instead. This allows more people entry into the lightning network and is going to be how we receive Zaps from Nostr.  We can find this in Wallet of Satoshi under “Receive” then “Lightning Address” and finally tap the “copy” button. We will need this later. Seen below in this screenshot: 

Step Two: Open Damus on iOS and go to your profile. Tap edit, then scroll down to where it will say “Lightning tips” these are another term for Zaps. Paste in your LNURL from Wallet of Satoshi.  Tap “Save” at the bottom. If you did it correctly a lightning bolt icon will appear in your profile page and in each of your posts. 

Step Three: Send a test Zap to yourself. Tap the lightning icon which will prompt to open a bitcoin lightning wallet. 

I chose Blue Wallet (again another custodial lightning wallet--see above). Enter in the sats you’d like to send. Today the exchange rate is 500 sats for $0.12 so I’ll fill that in. Tap send. You should then receive a notification from wallet of satoshi that you’ve received the Zap!!! 

That’s it! You are now able to receive Zaps on Nostr. Pat yourself on the back. Grab a steak and welcome to the future of value for value social media. Cheers!
