The problem
A useful engineering skill becomes harder to maintain when its packaged version and its source evolve separately. Instructions, examples, attribution, and release metadata can drift. The goal was to distribute the existing functional-programming skill without creating another copy to maintain by hand.
The approach
The skill stays in the repository’s canonical functional-programming directory. A Python builder copies an explicit set of resources into the release package and generates the portable manifest from the same plugin metadata. An explicit file list keeps unrelated repository content out of the artifact.
The package includes the complete skill, compatible manifests, icons, and attribution. It has no MCP server, connector, account requirement, or plugin-operated service. Its ability to inspect a repository or run code depends on the host session’s tools.
What it helps an engineer do
- Review JavaScript or TypeScript for mutation, side effects, and error-handling pitfalls.
- Refactor toward pure functions while preserving the project’s behavior and conventions.
- Learn composition and algebraic data types through concrete examples, such as the difference between map and flatMap.
These are supported workflows, not a guarantee that an automated refactor is correct. The resulting code still needs the project’s normal review and validation.
The resulting artifact
The builder produces a versioned ZIP and a SHA-256 checksum using the Python standard library. The release can be rebuilt from the maintained source, and the source map and adaptation notice travel with the skill.
Downloadable releases and availability in a public plugin directory are separate milestones. The source documentation describes both without treating a published ZIP as proof of directory approval.
Attribution and lessons
The plugin is an independent adaptation of Professor Frisby’s Mostly Adequate Guide to Functional Programming by the Mostly Adequate Core Team and contributors. The plugin and bundled skill use the CC BY-SA 4.0 license, with attribution and the adaptation notice included.
The useful engineering decision was keeping one source of truth for the skill and generating the package from it. That makes the release boundary inspectable and reduces the number of places a change must be made.
